CIEM Explained for Cloud Teams: Identity Is the Attack Path
What is CIEM (Cloud Infrastructure Entitlement Management)? Learn how cloud identity entitlement management fits into CNAPP, CSPM, and attack path analysis.
CIEM (Cloud Infrastructure Entitlement Management) is the cloud security discipline that asks: Who can access what — and what happens if that identity is compromised?
If CSPM finds misconfigured buckets, CIEM finds the over-privileged role that lets an attacker read them after pivoting from a low-severity entry point. In modern CNAPP platforms, cloud identity entitlement management is not a sidebar — it is a core node type in the attack path graph.
What is CIEM?
CIEM continuously analyzes:
- IAM users, roles, groups, and policies (AWS)
- Azure RBAC assignments and service principals
- GCP IAM bindings and service accounts
- Kubernetes RBAC and cluster-admin bindings
It detects:
| Risk | Example |
|---|---|
| Excessive permissions | * actions on * resources |
| Unused credentials | Access keys not used in 90 days |
| Privilege escalation paths | iam:PassRole + lambda:CreateFunction |
| Cross-account trust | External account can assume admin role |
| Toxic admin concentration | One role used by 50 services |
Why identity is half the path
Attackers pivot through roles, not only through subnets. Without CIEM nodes on the graph you under-count blast radius. How those paths are queried is attack path analysis; this page is who can do what.
CIEM vs. CSPM vs. CNAPP
| CSPM | CIEM | CNAPP | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Focus | Resource config | Permissions | Unified platform |
| Sample finding | Public S3 bucket | Admin role unused 180 days | Public bucket + role that grants read to attacker path |
| Agent model | Usually agentless | Agentless (API) | Combined |
| Prioritization | Often flat | Permission severity | Graph + path context |
CIEM answers who; CSPM answers what is exposed; CNAPP connects them.
Common CIEM findings (and why severity lies)
| Finding | Why context matters |
|---|---|
| Unused access key | Critical if key belongs to prod admin; low if lab-only |
AdministratorAccess attached |
Critical if assumable from internet-facing workload |
| Cross-account role trust | Depends on external account hygiene |
| Service account with storage admin | Critical if pod is in exposed namespace |
Cloud identity entitlement management without reachability context recreates alert fatigue. Graph-native tools attach CIEM nodes to network and workload edges.
CIEM capabilities to look for
- Effective permissions analysis — what a principal can actually do, not just policy JSON
- Right-sizing recommendations — shrink policies toward least privilege
- Anomaly detection — new admin grants, unusual assume-role patterns
- Graph integration — identity as first-class attack path node
- Multi-cloud normalization — same schema for AWS/Azure/GCP/K8s
CIEM in AWS, Azure, and GCP (quick reference)
AWS
- IAM Access Analyzer for external access
- Policy simulation and last-accessed data
- Watch:
sts:AssumeRolechains,PassRole, resource-based policies
Azure
- Entra ID + RBAC inheritance
- Watch: subscription-owner assignments, app registration secrets
GCP
- IAM Recommender, policy analyzer
- Watch:
roles/owner, service account key sprawl
Open-source scanners cover slices of this; full CIEM correlation often needs a graph layer like OpenSourceOM.
Implementing CIEM without alert overload
- Inventory all principals — human and machine
- Flag admin-equivalent — map custom policies to effective admin
- Cross-reference exposure — admin + internet path = P0
- Automate key rotation and removal — unused credentials first
- Feed graph — emit identity nodes and
ASSUMES/CAN_ACCESSedges
CIEM and compliance
Auditors ask about least privilege. CIEM provides:
- Evidence of permission reviews
- Tracks remediation of excessive policies
- Maps identity controls to frameworks (SOC 2, ISO 27001, PCI)
Pair CIEM reports with CSPM for configuration evidence.
Open source and CIEM
Dedicated open-source CIEM products are thinner than CSPM scanners, but you can:
- Export IAM/RBAC via cloud APIs
- Use graph tools (Cartography, custom collectors) for identity nodes
- Adopt platforms building CIEM into graph-native CNAPP — OpenSourceOM Core
Key takeaways
- CIEM = cloud identity entitlement management for permissions and blast radius
- Identity paths dominate modern cloud attack paths
- CNAPP integrates CIEM with CSPM and vulnerabilities in one graph
- Prioritize admin + exposure combinations first
- Graph-native analysis beats standalone IAM spreadsheets
